Autumn through to early spring is ideal — cooler temperatures, more reliable rainfall, and the plants establish roots before summer stress. We do plant in summer when needed, but it requires a stricter watering regime in the first 8–10 weeks.

Hedge Planting · Auckland
A hedge is only as good as the day it goes in. We prep the trench, set spacing for the species, plant straight, water in, and stake where needed — so your hedge establishes fast and grows even.
Most struggling Auckland hedges were compromised at planting: spacing wrong, holes too shallow, clay subsoil never broken up, no watering plan. We do it properly — trench (not individual holes) along the run, compost and slow-release fertiliser worked through, set spacing exactly to species, plant level, firm in, deep water, mulch. You get a written watering schedule for the first summer and we'll check back in to make sure it's taken.

Always. Auckland clay is the single biggest reason hedges fail to establish. We trench, break up the subsoil, work in compost and slow-release fertiliser, and only then plant. Skipping this is the false economy that costs you the hedge.
Species-dependent. Griselinia and pittosporum are typically 600–800mm centres; ficus tuffi for fast privacy 700–900mm; buxus much tighter at 250–300mm. Too wide gives a gappy hedge for years; too tight wastes plants and creates competition. We set it correctly for the species and your desired finished height.
Yes — see our hedge supply service. Most clients book supply + planting together so it's one quote, one timeline, and the plant guarantee applies.
If we supplied and planted and you've followed the watering schedule, we replace any failures within the establishment period free of charge. Plants we didn't supply or sites where watering wasn't kept up aren't covered — but we'll always tell you why something failed.
Yes, but we'll discuss setback — most hedges need 300–500mm clear of a fence so air can move and the back face doesn't stay damp. Planting too close to a boundary is also the source of most neighbour disputes down the track.
