Depends on the species and condition. Griselinia, photinia (red robin) and pittosporum take big reductions well and bounce back dense. Conifers, cedar and some natives regrow more slowly from old wood and need a staged approach. We'll tell you exactly what's safe before any cut is made — no guessing, no killed hedges.

In almost all cases, yes — provided the reduction is matched to the species. We cut in a way that encourages dense regrowth from below the cut line. We'll recommend a follow-up trim schedule (usually within 6–12 months) to lock the new shape in.

Yes — reductions take more time, more skill and produce much more green waste. We quote a fixed price after seeing photos so there are no surprises on the day. The cost reflects the work; the result is a hedge that's actually maintainable again.

For most residential hedges, no — but some boundary hedges fall under the Fencing Act, and trees over certain heights or species may have other protections. We'll flag anything you should discuss with the neighbour or check with Council before we start.

You can, but it's the most expensive way to run a hedge. A reduction every 3–5 years costs more in total than a routine annual trim — and the hedge looks tidy for far less of the time. We'd usually recommend reduction first, then a regular schedule.

Common with long-neglected hedges — green on the outside, brown and woody inside. We'll inspect honestly and tell you whether a reduction will recover or whether removal and replanting is the better call. We won't recommend a job that won't work.

Up to around 5m as standard from platform ladders. Taller hedges or restricted-access sites we'll assess in person and quote accordingly. We never start a reduction we can't finish safely.
