Viburnum hedge trimming in Auckland.

Dense, dark-green and tough — viburnum makes a serious privacy hedge that handles shade and trims up beautifully.

About Viburnum

Viburnum (mostly V. odoratissimum 'Awabuki' and V. tinus in Auckland gardens) is one of the most underrated hedge species we work with. Big glossy dark-green leaves, dense growth, and the ability to handle shade better than most evergreens make it ideal for screening between houses or on the south side of a section.

Why it's popular in Auckland

Where griselinia or pittosporum thin out in the shade, viburnum stays thick. It also flowers in spring (white clusters, lightly scented on the odoratissimum) and the leaves are big enough to give a really solid privacy wall. Common right across the North Shore, central Auckland and the inner west.

Best time to trim

Main trim in late spring after flowering (if you want to keep the flowers), or anytime late spring to autumn if flowering isn't a priority. A second tidy-up in late summer keeps the shape sharp. Viburnum is fairly forgiving — we can trim it in most conditions other than the coldest weeks of winter.

Care & trimming tips

  • Trim after spring flowering to keep the floral display
  • Mulch annually — viburnum likes a cool moist root zone
  • Tolerates hard reductions well; new growth comes from old wood reliably
  • Watch for thrips on the new growth in dry summers — silvers the leaves
  • Great for shaded boundaries where other species struggle

Common issues we see

Thrips damage on the new spring growth is the most common cosmetic issue, especially in dry years — it silvers the leaves but doesn't kill the plant. We also see some leaf-spot in damp shaded spots; usually a hard trim and better airflow sorts it. Overall a low-maintenance hedge once established.
