Ficus Tuffi hedge trimming in Auckland.

The modern privacy hedge of choice — dense, glossy, fast and disease-resistant. We trim ficus tuffi all over Auckland.

About Ficus Tuffi

Ficus tuffi has become the default privacy hedge in Auckland over the last decade. The dense glossy foliage, fast growth, and resistance to buxus blight made it the obvious replacement when classic buxus started failing. You'll see it lining driveways, fence boundaries and pool surrounds across the city.

Why it's popular in Auckland

It grows quickly into a thick green wall, takes a sharp formal trim, and holds its shape between visits. Unlike buxus it's almost never affected by blight, and unlike griselinia it has a finer leaf that suits modern architecture. Newer subdivisions in Hobsonville, Millwater, Silverdale and Greenhithe are full of it.

Best time to trim

Trim through the warmer months — spring, summer and early autumn. Ficus tuffi keeps growing later into autumn than most species, so a tidy-up in April keeps it sharp through winter. Avoid hard cuts in winter, especially on younger hedges.

Care & trimming tips

  • Trim regularly — 3–4 times a year if you want that crisp formal hedge look
  • Taper the sides slightly so the base stays full
  • Water deeply during dry spells — ficus tuffi shows stress quickly with yellow leaf drop
  • Feed in spring and mid-summer with a balanced slow-release fertiliser
  • Roots can be vigorous — keep at least 1m clear of paths and retaining walls

Common issues we see

The most common issue we see is leaf yellowing and drop after a long dry spell or sudden cold snap. It usually recovers with a feed and a deep watering. The other thing to watch is root invasion — older ficus tuffi hedges can lift pavers and crack thin retaining walls. We'll flag any concerns when we quote.

FAQ

Ficus Tuffi hedge questions

'Tuffi' is a compact, fine-leafed selection of Ficus microcarpa bred specifically for hedging — denser, slower-spreading, and far better suited to a formal trim than the parent species.

For a really crisp look, 3–4 trims a year. For a relaxed hedge, two a year is fine. We do plenty of both.

Older established hedges can have vigorous roots. If yours is close to a path or retaining wall we'll flag it — usually it's fine, but we'll let you know what to watch for.

Very popular for pool screens — fine leaves, evergreen, doesn't shed messily. We do a lot of pool-side ficus jobs across the North Shore.
