Griselinia hedge trimming in Auckland.

Auckland's go-to boundary hedge — fast, glossy, forgiving. We trim hundreds of griselinia hedges across the city every year.

About Griselinia

Griselinia (often called kapuka or NZ broadleaf) is the most planted hedge species in Auckland for good reason: it's fast-growing, salt-tolerant, evergreen, and keeps a clean line when trimmed regularly. Almost every street on the North Shore and out west has at least one griselinia boundary hedge.

Why it's popular in Auckland

It handles Auckland's wind and coastal salt better than most. It's happy in clay or sandy soil, recovers well from hard trims, and gives you a thick green wall within a few seasons. Plant it 60cm apart and you'll have a usable hedge in two to three years.

Best time to trim

Main shape-up in late spring (October–November) once the spring flush has hardened, plus a tidy-up trim in late summer (February–March). Avoid hard reductions in the middle of winter — wait for the warmer months when the hedge will recover quickly.

Care & trimming tips

  • Trim regularly to keep the canopy thick — let it go too long and the inside goes bare
  • Taper the sides slightly (wider at the base) so the bottom doesn't get shaded out
  • Hard reductions are fine — griselinia comes back well from old wood
  • Mulch in spring and water deeply during long dry spells, especially the first 2 years
  • Watch for yellowing leaves — usually a sign of poor drainage or nitrogen deficiency

Common issues we see

The most common problem we see is griselinia that's been left too long and gone leggy or hollow inside. The good news: in most cases we can reduce it back hard and it'll re-shoot from the older wood within a season. We also see a lot of half-dead patches caused by waterlogged clay soil — we'll flag it and recommend a planter or drainage fix if needed.

FAQ

Griselinia hedge questions

Twice a year is the sweet spot for most Auckland properties — once in late spring and once in late summer. Faster-growing hedges in sunny spots might need a third light trim.

Yes — griselinia is one of the most forgiving species for hard reductions. We'll walk you through how far we can safely take it back without bare patches.

Excellent on the coast — it's one of the few species that thrives in salt-laden wind. Common all along the East Coast Bays and Hibiscus Coast for good reason.
