'Resilience' is our top recommendation for new plantings — psyllid-resistant, dense, and great new-growth colour. 'Cascade' and 'Backyard Bliss' are also solid choices.

Lilly Pilly· Syzygium / Acmena species
Glossy, fast and colourful — lilly pilly has become one of Auckland's most-planted modern hedges. We trim it across the city.
Lilly pilly (Syzygium and Acmena species) is a favourite in newer Auckland gardens. The new growth flushes red or bronze before settling to deep glossy green, and it forms a dense privacy hedge quickly. Popular varieties we trim include 'Resilience', 'Cascade' and 'Backyard Bliss'.
Fast growth, attractive coloured new foliage, and a clean architectural look make it a designer favourite. Newer cultivars are also psyllid-resistant, which solved the main problem with older lilly pilly plantings. Common in Hobsonville Point, Millwater, Albany and most newer subdivisions.
Trim through spring, summer and early autumn. A trim immediately after each main growth flush keeps the hedge tight and triggers another flush of colourful new growth. Avoid hard cuts in winter.
Older non-resistant varieties suffer badly from psyllid damage — pimply lumps on the leaves. If yours is affected we'll discuss whether it's worth treating, replacing or living with. Sudden leaf drop is usually drought stress; deep watering and mulch sorts it.

Psyllid damage. Newer cultivars are resistant — older plantings often need treatment, replacement or a tolerant approach. We can advise on what's worth doing.
Fast — 50–80cm per year. Plan on 3 trims a year if you want a sharp formal hedge.
Yes — small fluffy white flowers followed by edible berries on some varieties. Trimming reduces flowering; let it go between trims if you want the display.
