What changes the cost of a hedge trim
Rather than quote ranges that may not match your hedge, we send a fixed quote after a quick look. The most common categories we see across the North Shore, Hobsonville and West Auckland:
- Small front hedge — low boundary or feature hedge, light maintenance trim.
- Standard boundary hedge — average residential hedge requiring shaping and trimming.
- Tall established hedge — taller two-sided hedges needing platforms or pole saws.
- Heavy reduction — chainsaw work, branch removal, restoration trims.
Every quote includes trimming, shaping, full clean-up and green waste removed off-site. One-off jobs cost more per visit than ongoing maintenance.
What affects the price of a hedge trim?
Five things move the number up or down on every quote:
- Height. Anything over 2.5m needs ladders, platforms or a pole saw — slower and higher risk, so higher cost.
- Length and number of sides. A two-sided boundary hedge is almost double a single-faced front hedge of the same length.
- How long since the last trim. 12+ months of growth means more clippings, more shaping and often a soft reduction.
- Species and density. Griselinia and pittosporum cut fast. Ficus tuffi, laurel and old conifers are slower.
- Access and waste. Steep banks, narrow side-access and big clippings volumes all add labour.
How we quote — fixed price, no surprises
Every Hedge Guys quote is a fixed price, not an hourly rate. Once we've seen photos or visited the site, the number doesn't change unless you ask for extra work on the day.
The fastest path to an accurate number:
- Text a couple of photos to 021 239 8850 with your suburb.
- Mention rough hedge length and height (a step or fence panel is fine as reference).
- We'll reply with a fixed quote, usually within a few hours on business days.
Ways to keep hedge trimming costs down
- Trim once a year, not every three. Long-overgrown hedges cost significantly more than a hedge kept in shape.
- Combine jobs. Trim, lawn mow and tidy in one visit beats three separate call-outs.
- Go on a maintenance plan. Regular visits (six-weekly or quarterly) carry a lower per-visit price than ad-hoc work.
- Keep mature heights in check. Letting a hedge run to 4m+ pushes you into reduction-pricing territory.
Frequently asked questions
- We quote a fixed price for the whole job. You see the number before we start and it doesn't change unless you ask for additional work.
