How the maths works
Plants per metre changes by species. Fine-leaved species like Buxus need tight 0.25 m spacing to read as a hedge; broad-leaved species like Laurel knit together at 0.8 m. We always add one extra plant to close the end so the hedge doesn't taper off.
If you're planting against a fence, allow 300–400 mm clearance from the fence line for trimming access on both sides. For a free-standing hedge that finishes at 1.8–2.0 m, plan on roughly 600–700 mm of base width.
