Auckland Hedge Maintenance Calendar

The right job at the right time. This is the same seasonal rhythm we follow across hundreds of Auckland properties — adjust by a couple of weeks for coastal vs inland conditions.

Spring

September – November

  • First main trim

Trim once the spring flush has hardened off (mid-Oct onward). One clean cut sets the shape for the season.

  • Feed established hedges

Apply a slow-release nitrogen-rich fertiliser at the base. Water in well.

  • Top up mulch

Refresh bark mulch to 50 mm — keeps moisture in and suppresses kikuyu before summer.

  • Watch for new pests

Aphids on Photinia, psyllids on Pittosporum, scale on Buxus. Treat early before populations build.

Summer

December – February

  • Light tidy trim

A quick tip-prune in late December keeps lines crisp before the holidays without stressing plants.

  • Deep water young hedges

Any hedge under 2 years needs a deep soak twice a week, even with rain. Surface watering won't reach roots.

  • Hold off on heavy reduction

Hard cuts in 25°C+ heat scorch internal foliage. Save those for autumn.

  • Monitor Buxus blight

Humid days = peak risk. Improve airflow with a thinning trim and avoid overhead watering.

Autumn

March – May

  • Main shaping trim

Best window for a clean structural trim — cooler temps mean tight, even regrowth before winter.

  • Hard reductions and restoration

Late March – April is the safest time to reduce height or width significantly. Most species recover before frost.

  • Second feed

A light potassium-leaning feed in March hardens off new growth for winter.

  • Clear leaf litter

Rake out the hedge base to prevent fungal issues over the wet months.

Winter

June – August

  • Structural pruning of bare-stem hedges

Deciduous hedges (e.g. hornbeam) can be cut hard while dormant.

  • Avoid trimming frost-tender species

Hold off on Ficus tuffi, Lilly Pilly and tender Camellia until spring.

  • Plan new plantings

Best planting window opens late winter — soil is moist and roots establish before summer stress.

  • Tool service

Sharpen blades, replace hedge trimmer cords, and clean machinery so you're ready for spring.
