What makes a great large boundary hedge?
Large boundary hedges do real work: privacy from two-storey neighbours, shelter from prevailing wind, and a green wall that lifts the look of the whole property. The best species for the job are tall-growing, dense, hardy and recover well from heavy trimming.
- Height potential — 3 m and up without losing density at the base.
- Wind resilience — handles Auckland's westerly gusts without thinning out.
- Recoverability — accepts hard reduction trims if it gets away from you.
- Year-round screening — evergreen with consistent leaf cover.
Top species for tall boundary hedges
- Griselinia littoralis — the Auckland workhorse. Holds 3–5 m comfortably, salt and wind tolerant, easy to reduce.
- Ficus Tuffi — fastest to a tall screen. 4–6 m achievable in sheltered suburbs. Needs 3–4 trims per year.
- Photinia 'Red Robin' — vibrant red new growth, 3–4 m, dense once established.
- Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) — large glossy leaves, 3–5 m, classic formal boundary look.
- Viburnum tinus / odoratissimum — dense, flowering, reliable to 3–4 m on most Auckland sites.
Planting a long boundary hedge — get the spacing right
Overcrowding is the most common mistake on long runs. Tight spacing looks good in year one and bare at the base by year five. The rules we use across Auckland:
- Griselinia: 60 cm centres for boundary heights above 3 m.
- Ficus Tuffi: 80 cm to 1 m — give it room to breathe.
- Photinia / Laurel: 70–90 cm depending on grade size.
- Soil prep: Trench the full run, not individual holes. Compost + gypsum through Auckland clay.
- Irrigation: Lay dripline along the row before mulching — the difference in year-one survival is huge.
Keeping a large hedge dense, square and healthy
- Trim 2–3 times per year once at target height. Light, frequent trims beat one annual hack.
- Taper the sides — base wider than top so lower foliage gets light.
- Reduction trims — most Auckland boundary species recover from a 30–40% height reduction if done in the right season.
- Feed annually — a long hedge pulls a lot of nutrients out of the soil.
We trim and reduce large boundary hedges across Auckland — from lifestyle blocks in Kumeu to two-storey suburban boundaries on the North Shore.
Frequently asked questions
- Griselinia is the all-round winner for tall Auckland boundary hedges — it holds 3–5 m, handles wind and salt, and recovers from hard trims. Ficus Tuffi is faster but needs more maintenance.
